The child protection sector is going through a tumultuous period, not only in Australia but across the world. Many Government enquiries have been held over the last decade and there is a multitude of reports available analysing what has gone wrong in specific cases or parts of the sector. Child protection issues frequently lead the daily news bulletins and as the issues being dealt with are mostly emotive, it results in every worker regularly feeling personally challenged, wherever one works in the sector.
It is CAFFSA’s aim through research and development initiatives to be at the forefront of new research on best practice models relating to child development and child focussed care models. CAFFSA worked recently in close collaboration with the Australian Centre for Child Protection and are in the process to develop new projects.
CAFFSA provides an opportunity for management and frontline staff from the various parts of the non-government sector to get together in regular meetings to discuss, analyse and de-brief with colleagues how to respond to the challenges and look at ways how to improve the outcomes for children and families we work with and care for.
Training and development initiatives often involve other partners, e.g. the Department for Education and Child Development through the ‘Partnership in Practice’ initiatives. We also collaborate with SACOSS, SNAICC, the Australian Centre for Child Protection and we provide training to members in specific program areas or topical sector issues.
CAFFSA plays a significant role in advocating for reform in a range of forums, including through giving evidence and making submissions to various enquiries. View our various publications here.
