Description

Peer, parent and family support and advocacy (parent advocacy) is a new and exciting initiative in child protection in Australia. Parent advocacy occurs when parents and family with lived experience of child protection interventions and child removal offer help support and advocacy to parents who are currently going through similar processes.

This forum will provide an overview of research messages in support of parent advocacy. It will then hear from parent advocates in SA and elsewhere, to learn from their experiences in the system.

Participants will then do workshop activities to explore the potential to integrate parent advocacy into the child protection sector in SA

Highlights:

  • The workshop is jointly organised by Child and Family Focus SA, the Reilyy Foundation and Life Without Barriers and facilitated by Dana Shen.
  • Learning from history and key research messages
  • A panel of parent advocates with lived experience of the child protection system
  • Workshop co-design activities to plan for and build parent and family leadership and parent advocacy into the sector in South Australia.
